Because it’s Brownie-Spider Season!

What is Brownie/Spider? Brownie – Spider — dates back to the School’s founding in 1882, and involves everyone at the School, including teachers and staff. (The Head of School remains impartial by being half Brownie and half Spider). When a new student arrives to campus, she becomes a Brownie or a Spider. A girl’s allegiance can be spotted easily throughout her years at St. Tim’s — Brownies wear brown kilts on Fridays throughout the academic year; Spiders wear green kilts. Each group enjoys its own traditions and songs and forms a family within the larger community. Every year, spirit runs high as Brownies and Spiders prepare for their annual three-court basketball game held the Saturday before Thanksgiving vacation. This major event draws families, friends, and alumnae Brownies and Spiders from near and far.

About their time at St. Timothy’s!

Constanze Vorrath, an Austrian student at St. Timothy’s School, MD, always wanted to take an exchange year. She has been surprised and pleased by the international environment at St. Tim’s, noting that she was surprised that “so many people from so many different cultures can live together—it’s amazing!” Constanze loves a tradition at school called Brownie/Spider, in which each girl is assigned to either the Brownie or the Spider team, and the teams compete with each other, wear different school uniforms, and become a loyal cohesive group. Constanze has been impressed by the International Baccalaureate Program at St. Tim’s and she hopes to continue towards an IB Diploma. She has been offered scholarships at both Danube International School in Vienna, Astria and Leysin American School in Switzerland, and is now deciding which scholarship to accept. After high school she hopes to study in England, Italy, or Spain. She looks forward to returning to the mountains of Austria, to skiing, and to good Austrian food, but she will miss her life here, especially playing lacrosse, “the coolest sport ever!” Constanze’s varsity lacrosse team AND volleyball team made it to league championships.

Frauke Grundmann, a student at St. Timothy’s School, MD, from Wuppertal, Germany, learned about ASSIST through a friend who was a Scholar in 2010. For Frauke, who calls herself Maria here, the international community and program at St. Tim’s (which is an IB school) was both surprising and rewarding. “I came with the expectation of a typical school life in an American high school as you always see it in movies…I now have friends from all over the world.” Frauke realizes “how little I knew about the world” before, and she feels her life has been enriched by that. During the holidays, Frauke was invited home to Arkansas with a school friend, and she experienced a Thanksgiving dinner that was not just family, as she expected, but a big celebration with 50 people! Her host’s grandmother gave Frauke the wishbone from the turkey, teaching her traditions about the wishbone, “which linked me to the family and was a very special gesture.” After Frauke finishes school in Germany, she will go to a German university to study physics. She hopes to spend another year in an American university as well, and “to collect more experiences in the United States.”

Julia Cueto, a student at St. Timothy’s School, MD, learned about the ASSIST Program through a friend in her native Spain who had been an ASSIST Scholar. “He told me I should do it because it was an amazing experience,” she says. And she has not been disappointed. Julia is particularly impressed with the difference in teaching styles between St. Tim’s, where students learn through reading and class discussion, and in Spain, where most of the learning takes place through memorization. It was challenging at first to find new friends and use her English all the time, but Julia says her new friends gave her a lot of support and now she speaks English easily. Julia will go to university in Spain, but she hopes to come back to the US for another year of study. Meanwhile, Julia will be happy to see her friends and family at home, and “show them my new and best me.”

Blog Profile questions for Arianna Bernstein
Student’s Name: Arianna Bernstein
Class: 2013
Brownie/Spider: Brownie

Where are you from?
I live in Annapolis, Maryland

What school did you attend prior to coming to St. Tim’s?
I went to Severn School, in Severna Park, Maryland.

What made you choose St. Tim’s?
I chose St. Tim’s because my sister went to high school here. I wanted the same experience she had with all of the fun traditions and all of the friends she made.

What is it like being a Day Student at St. Tim’s?
I love being a day student at St. Tim’s! I live about 40 minutes away, which is the only down side. I used to board during my freshmen and sophomore year. Having been both a day student and a boarder has really allowed me to have best of both worlds.

What sports are you involved in?
I do a sport outside of school. I swim for a club team in Baltimore. I practice Monday- Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:30pm and on Saturday from 6am-8am. I also practice before school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:15am-6:15am.

You are quite the accomplished swimmer! Will you tell us more about your accomplishments/awards?
This past December, I competed at the US Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. It was one of the coolest experiences I have had so far and there were swimmers from all over the world competing. My best events are 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke. I am also a Scholastic All-American in 4 events, which means you have to qualify for certain times but also have to have a GPA of a 3.5 or higher. I am also ranked #1 in Maryland for the 100 backstroke.

How has STT supported you and your swimming?
STT has been one of my biggest supporters! Since I live so far away, STT drives me to practice everyday at 3:00, and I am very thankful for all the wonderful teachers who have taken me. The teachers are also very supportive when I need to miss school for my swim meets.

What do you think sets St. Tim’s apart from other boarding and day schools?
St. Tim’s is completely different from any other school. St. Tim’s has people from all over the world, and I am able to learn so many things about different cultures and countries every day. St. Tim’s is also a place where everyone knows and supports each other because the community is so small.

What are you interested in studying in college?
I am interested in studying communications/ media/ public relations.

What type of schools are you looking at?
I am looking at schools that have communications/ media/ public relations majors. The schools that I am looking at also must have a top Division I swimming program.

What is your favorite tradition at St. Tim’s?
My favorite tradition is the fives high tea. This is my favorite tradition because it only happens once and everyone gets to dress up. I also love this tradition because the teachers serve us tea, finger sandwiches, and cookies.
